Abstract

Purpose: This study was aimed to develop educational contents and materials for orthognathic surgery patients.

Methods: We reviewed the educational contents of professional books and the websites, and surveyed educational needs from 20 orthognathic surgery patients.

Results: We selected 44 educational contents in 5 domains: definition, indication, duration of hospitalization, return to daily living, post operative management (endotracheal tube, drainage bag, cold and hot massage, pain control, feeding, oral care, fixation, palate exercise, medication, autotransfusion, complications, outpatient schedule) and developed booklet with A5 size and 14 page long.

Conclusion: We developed the educational contents and a booklet for orthognathic surgery patients, but did not
apply the booklet to the patients in this study. Therefore, we recommend further studies to see the effects of booklet
on the improving knowledge and self care practice among orthognathic surgery patients.
